*Now I wonder what you think of me*
*Don't know why I break so easily*
All my fears are armed surrounding me
Barn|| Three o'clock || OUTFIT
Gravel crunched under the boots of the long legged woman who stepped out of the comfortable, black F250 truck. Waves upon waves of long, dark brown hair cascaded down her back and blew lightly in the wind. A glance at the darkened sky told her that rain was quickly on it's way and she cast her blue eyed gaze around the yard. No one was out, probably due to the oncoming rainstorm. Skylar grabbed a black cotton lead rope from the front seat of her truck, pocketed her keys and softly shut the truck door. She wanted to get Exodus, her old Thoroughbred event horse, into the barn and settled in his stall before the rain showed up. He had always been an excitable guy, even though he'd been retired from showing for three years. She still rode him lightly, but his legs had developed a bit of arthritis and soreness from eventing at such high levels and he had bowed his right front tendon in the accident the pair had had that ended their careers as high level eventers. Exodus had been Skylar's horse ever since she was sixteen, and had taken her through 1* events. After their unfortunate fall on a slippery cross country one time, Skylar had retired him to pleasure riding and lesson horse. Though she wouldn't admit it, the fall had put a damper on her confidence more than his. She had shattered her left ankle, which was all healed up now, but still gave her some problems if she tried to run around on it or something.
Memories flooded Skylar's mind as she came up on the back of the trailer. Pausing for a second, she let them all sweep by before brushing away a small tear. She missed eventing, and was only twenty one. She could have made herself a great career with horses, if she didn't let her secret fear always get in the way. Shaking her head as if to clear her thoughts, she opened the back of the trailer and stepped inside to back Exodus out. The tall, chestnut Thoroughbred gelding's nostrils flared wide as he tried to take in all of the new scents surrounding him. Carefully backing him off the Sundowner trailer, Skylar let her horse take a good look at his new home. No one would ever have guessed he was on the older side by the way he lifted his tail and pranced around. His ears were pricked forward and head held proud and high as he let out a shrill whinny into the cool, before-the-storm air. Skylar patted him on the neck and led him towards the barn, glad he wasn't too excited about being somewhere new. The two walked silently down the barn isle until they found Exodus' designated stall. He was led into the roomy box stall and halter was taken off and hung on a hook next to the door. "I think you're gonna like it here, Exy." she crooned to the big boy. "Momma's going to work, and you will get to be a sweet, lazy boy," She rubbed his ears affectionately. Exodus was one horse Skylar would never sell. She bought him off the track as a three year old and retrained him in Dressage at first. She still had her event horse at that time, so she'd never bothered trying to teach Exodus how to jump until her parents told her she needed to sell one of her horses. Her bond with Exodus was too great to be broken, so she decided to try and jump him. Surprising them all, he was a pro at it and ended up taking her to the top.
Figuring she should let Exodus settle in, Skylar gave her beloved horse one more pat on the neck and quietly left the stall. She lingered just outside the stall door for a bit, listening to her horse's soft nickers to her as she texted a few friends back in Florida. She missed the warm weather and everyone she'd grown up with, but she'd needed to move up to Kentucky when her dad moved there. She still didn't have enough money to make it on her own and needed to be near him in case anything happened. Finding a barn she liked had taken some time, but she'd finally decided that Southern Blues Stables looked like a great choice and a peaceful place for Exodus to live out his retirement. Putting her phone back in her pocket, she strode back out to her truck to drop the trailer and park her truck so she could get used to the grounds and find her way around a bit.
